ABOUT THIS COMMISSION
With its swollen rear arches, whale-tail spoiler and unmistakable silhouette, the 930 Turbo looks every bit the hooligan, but it is the way it delivers its performance that really defines it. Below 3,500rpm, the 930 can feel almost leisurely, the four-speed gearbox demanding patience while the turbocharger gathers its breath. Then, quite suddenly, the scenery starts arriving at an altogether different speed. The 3.0, and later 3.3-litre flat six comes alive with a ferocious surge, delivering its power in a way that feels gloriously mechanical and faintly outrageous by modern standards. There is no hiding behind electronics here: throttle discipline, anticipation and a healthy respect for the rear-engined layout are all part of the experience.
The later 1989 cars, with their five-speed G50 gearbox, offer a little more usability, but the earlier four-speed cars have a character all of their own. The 930 isn't a 911 to be hurried into understanding; it rewards patience, commitment and a willingness to engage with its peculiarities. In an age when performance has become increasingly effortless, the original Turbo reminds us that sometimes the most memorable speed comes with a little drama.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Paul Ward has been a professional photographer for over twenty years now and recently won his category at the British Photography Awards 2020. Over the years his work has been published in many books and magazines both in the UK and internationally and his architectural images currently adorn the walls aboard Cunard’s flagship Queen Mary 2. Paul’s passion for cars started when he bought his first Austin Mini almost 30 years ago and ever since then he has been obsessed with both classic cars and modern supercars, so, as an image maker, it’s not surprising that automobile photography has become a passion of his too.
