How to Choose the Right Print Size for Your Wall

It matches what we've seen too; below 60% and the piece reads as small and disconnected; above 75% and it crowds the wall with no breathing room.

A 3-metre sofa wall suits a print between 1.8m and 2.25m wide; comfortably an A0 or Supersized piece. A standard 1.4m sideboard suits something in the 84cm–105cm range, which sits an A1 print well. If you're hanging above a fireplace, use the mantel width as your baseline, not the full chimney breast.

Viewing distance determines perceived detail

The second variable is how far back you'll typically stand or sit. Photographic printing convention puts the ideal viewing distance at 1.5–2x a print's diagonal measurement; close enough to take in the full frame without moving your head, far enough not to fragment into detail. Automotive photography rewards closer inspection than most subjects; the paint texture, the reflections, the mechanical detail, so we tend toward the tighter end of that range rather than the wider one.

An A3 print (29.7×42cm, diagonal ~51cm) reads best from 75cm–1m away; appropriate for a hallway, study, or office wall you pass close to. An A1 print (59.4×84.1cm, diagonal ~103cm) wants 1.5–2m; right for a living room where seating is set back from the wall. This trips people up more than any other part of sizing, so it's worth being precise. The size name means something different depending on which format you order:

• Framed prints - the size (A3, A2, A1, A0, Supersized) refers to the fine art paper inside the frame, not the outer footprint on your wall. The frame and mount add to that, typically 5–10cm per edge, so an A1 framed print occupies noticeably more wall space than 59.4 × 84.1cm once mounted.
• Canvas and aluminium composite prints - the size refers to the outer, mounted dimension. What you order is what goes on the wall; there's no frame or mount adding to the footprint, so an A1 canvas is 59.4 × 84.1cm edge to edge.

If you're sizing tightly against a fixed space; between two windows, above a specific piece of furniture, filling a precise gap, check which format you're ordering before you measure. A framed A1 and a canvas A1 will not occupy the same amount of wall.

When to go custom

The five standard sizes cover most walls. Three situations call for something outside them:

• The artwork's native aspect ratio doesn't fit A-series proportions - panoramic and wide-crop automotive photography often needs a custom dimension to preserve the composition, rather than being cropped to fit A3–A0 ratios.
• Double-height walls, stairwells, and commercial installs - beyond Supersized (1200 × 2000mm), dealership walls, showrooms, and hospitality spaces sometimes call for something larger still.
• A specific gap you're filling - between two doors, above a run of cabinetry, beside a staircase. Bespoke sizing to the millimetre avoids the compromise of picking the nearest standard size.

Hanging height matters as much as width

Width gets most of the attention, but the wrong hanging height undoes good sizing just as easily. For domestic spaces: living rooms, offices, hallways, the centre of the print should sit at roughly 145–150cm from the floor, which is standard eye level for a person of average height standing in the room.

Garages, man-caves, and showroom walls are the exception. These are spaces people tend to view from further back and often while standing near a car rather than seated, so hanging 10–15cm higher than the domestic rule keeps the piece clear of workbenches, tool chests, and vehicle roof lines while still reading correctly from typical viewing distance.
